John Costa took the first steps into business on the 21st of September 1965 when he completed his electrical apprenticeship and started to work for himself.

John’s dedication was apparent from the start. It was his aim to never let anybody down. He worked 12-15 hours a day from his Mini Minor van, carefully balancing both his family and his business commitments.

Committed to our clients
John’s hard work and dedication are reflected by J & M Costa’s committed attitude today. Even now that we have grown to 140 staff and 30 apprentices, the Costa commitment is still shared by all of us.

Part of our secret is that the company remains a family business. Sixteen years after John started working from his van, his first son Stephen started his apprenticeship and rose up the company to his current position of General Manager. Some years later, John’s second son David started his apprenticeship and is now our Fields Operation Manager. Seven years later, they were joined by their brother-in-law John Vella, who is now our Administration Manager and Co-Manager in Victoria.

Rapid growth
As the company grew, we expanded from our original base of Wentworthville and moved in 1973 to Penrith. In 1995 we opened our Central Coast business and in 2000 we started operations in Victoria, rapidly followed by the North Coast in 2003.

We also diversified, applying the Costa dedication to a series of different but complementary activities. In 1995 we started to offer Universal Energy, underground and overhead power connections. We started to insall air conditioning in 2002, then moved into JSD Home Integration, security alarms, home theatre and ducted vacuums in 2003. Most recently we have started to offer sales, consulting and design services.

Our skills and dedication have been rewarded by recognition as Australia’s number one residential electrical contractor by one of the leading manufacturers of electrical power, and the awards that we have won, including two HIA awards (Housing Industry Association) and several community awards “Rotary”.
